CAMBODIAN War Widows (2013-2016)

CambodiaN War Widows Project

The Cambodia War Widows Project was founded and directed together with Chath pierSath, an artist who survived the Khmer Rouge killings. Fourteen elderly widows in an impoverished remote village were engaged in dialogue about the atrocities they remember and the difficulties they have continued to face. They created fabric prints and maps in commemoration of their dead husbands. Each widow made a pillowcase featuring a cyanotype image of an object that had been meaningful in her marriage. The multimedia installation that tells their stories was exhibited in Cambodia in Phnom Penh, as well as at Princeton University.

The widows in the project are Uy, Pan, Rom, Hach, Sok, Yeay, Doeung, Phan, Khem, Chea, Bon, Kor, Kok, and Im.
